How to renew your driver's licence at a South African licensing centre (2026)

Last checked: 26 October 2026 (SAST). Lines marked ⚠️ are weaker: undated, media-only, or sources disagree. Confirm those with your centre.

Short version: go in person to a driving licence testing centre (DLTC), ideally before your card expires. Take your ID, your old card, ID photos and proof of address. You'll do an eye test and give fingerprints, pay a fee that depends on your province or municipality, then collect the new card from the same centre once it's printed. You only need to book online in Gauteng and parts of the Eastern Cape. Everywhere else it's normally walk-in.

Use this page for the national process. Use a province or centre page for hours, address, local fees and queue tips. → Find your centre

1. Disclaimer

General information from public sources, checked 26 October 2026. Not legal advice, and not an official RTMC, Department of Transport, provincial or municipal page. Fees, documents, booking rules and hours change and differ between centres. Confirm with your DLTC before you go.

2. Quick answers

Question Answer Source / confidence
Who issues the card? Your local DLTC (municipal or provincial) captures the application. The card is printed nationally by the Driving Licence Card Account (DLCA). MyBroadband, 29 Apr 2026 (media)
How long is the card valid? 5 years from the date of renewal. Western Cape Govt, KZN Transport (official)
When should I renew? Before expiry. gov.za says four weeks before. gov.za (official)
Do I redo the driving test? No. Eye test and fingerprints only. gov.za, RTMC FAQ (official)
Can I renew at any centre? KZN says you may renew at any DLTC in the country, but you collect at the centre where you applied. KZN Transport (official, undated)
Is there one national fee? No. gov.za says "contact your local licensing office." Published examples run from R140 to R250 (see §4). gov.za (official)
Do I need to book? Gauteng: yes (NaTIS online). Eastern Cape: Gqeberha and Kariega. Other provinces: walk-in. See §6. RTMC + media, see §6
How long until the card is ready? Official pages say 4–6 weeks (gov.za), about 6 weeks (RTMC), 6–8 weeks (KZN). The DLCA's own 2026/27 target is 21 working days to print. See §8

3. Documents to take

Bring originals plus a copy of your ID. National and provincial pages agree on the core list; the number of photos is the main thing that differs.

4. Fees: not national, so check your province

Licence-card fees are set provincially or municipally. gov.za doesn't publish a national amount. The figures below are examples from official pages, each undated unless stated. Don't treat them as national.

Western Cape (provincial page; City of Cape Town matches) R140 card issue (City: R185 if already expired) R45 WCG, City of Cape Town Medium. Undated, unchanged for years ⚠️

5. Find your nearest DLTC

There is no single official national map of DLTCs. The official route is:

6. Booking (NaTIS eQueue) or walk-in, by province

NaTIS "Request a Slot" (eQueue) at https://online.natis.gov.za/equeue-ui/#/ is only for licence-card renewals and PrDPs, and only where the province has signed up. Provinces decide whether to join (TopAuto, quoting RTMC; media).

Province Renewal: booking or walk-in? Evidence Confidence
Gauteng Book online on NaTIS. Smart Licensing Centres: "booking is essential." Mogale City: online only, walk-ins for 60+ on Wednesdays only. Gauteng DRT via gov.za, 7 Aug 2026, Mogale City High (official, 2026)
Eastern Cape Book online for Gqeberha and Kariega centres; elsewhere in the province, assume walk-in ⚠️ RTMC release, Jan 2024; MyBroadband, Mar–Apr 2026 Medium
North West Was added mid-2024, then appears to have been removed. Walk-in ⚠️ MyBroadband, 25 Mar 2026 (media) Low-medium
Western Cape Walk-in. NaTIS shows "Your Province has not been added to the online platform." MyBroadband, Nov 2024, TopAuto (media); City release Feb 2025 Medium
KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape Walk-in Same media reports; RTMC: "drivers in other provinces can use the services at their driving licence centres" (quoted in MyBroadband, Mar 2026) Medium

⚠️ One secondary site claims Western Cape centres take online bookings through a provincial system. We found no official page saying this, and it contradicts the City of Cape Town and media reports. Ignore it unless an official source confirms.

Over 60? RTMC said in Jan 2024 that people over 60 are exempt from booking and can walk in to any DLTC (RTMC). Mogale City limits this to Wednesdays. Check your centre.

How eQueue works (where available), from the NaTIS page:

  1. Register (a registration SMS/email is not a slot).
  2. Choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice DLTCs.
  3. A slot is allocated within 30 days by SMS/email.
  4. Accept or decline within 24 hours, or it goes to someone else (you stay in the queue).
  5. If you accept and don't show up, you can't register for an allocated slot again.

NaTIS support: 0861 400 800 (on the eQueue page) / 0861 726 847 (on natis.gov.za), onlinesupport@rtmc.co.za.

7. Step by step at the centre

Before you go

  1. Check the expiry date on your card. Renew early; you can renew any time before it expires.
  2. Check whether your province needs a booking (§6). If yes, book on NaTIS.
  3. Gather documents (§3). Pre-fill DL1 if you can print it.
  4. Check your centre's hours on its province or centre page, and arrive early. Queue cut-offs are often earlier than closing time ⚠️ (centre-dependent).

At the DLTC

  1. Hand in DL1 and documents.
  2. Eye test. Done at the DLTC. If your sight has worsened, a restriction (e.g. glasses) is added. If you fail outright, the licence isn't renewed (WCG).
    • Optometrist report instead? gov.za and KZN say yes (KZN: not older than 3 months). Mogale City lists it as optional. MyBroadband (Mar 2026) reports the promised national "use any optometrist" option never launched. ⚠️ Accepted in some provinces; ask your centre. Bring glasses regardless.
  3. Fingerprints and photo captured.
  4. Pay and keep the receipt. It's your proof of application.
  5. Already expired? Apply for a temporary driving licence at the same time (extra fee; valid 6 months) (WCG, KZN).

9. Common errors and how to fix them

Problem What it means What to do
NaTIS: "Your Province has not been added to the online platform" Your province doesn't use eQueue for renewals Walk in at your DLTC (TopAuto)
Registered on eQueue but no booking Registration ≠ slot. Allocation can take up to 30 days Wait for the second SMS/email; then accept within 24 h (NaTIS)
Missed the 24-hour accept window Slot reassigned You stay in the queue; wait for the next allocation
Accepted a slot, then missed it You're blocked from re-registering for allocated slots Book a slot "as and when available" on the site (NaTIS)
Centre says "system is offline" eNaTIS outage (e.g. countrywide on 6 Oct 2026, back 7 Oct) Nothing can be processed; ask whether to wait or return (Hessequa Municipality)
Turned away: proof of address Not in your name, or older than 3 months Bring an affidavit from the account holder plus their bill (§3)
Turned away: photos Wrong count or format Take 4 identical ID photos
SMS says "Problem card" Production issue Go back to the DLTC where you applied
Temporary licence about to lapse, card not ready Print delays Go back with your receipt and ask. ⚠️ No official extension rule found
Lost or stolen card (not expiring) Same process as renewal, plus a police or commissioner-of-oaths affidavit (RTMC FAQ, WCG)

Never pay "runners" or anyone outside the official cashier.

Escalation: centre manager → municipal/provincial transport department (NaTIS "Where to go" numbers, §5) → NaTIS online support (system/eQueue problems). RTMC lists a National Inspectorate for DLTCs for complaints about testing centres (RTMC FAQ). ⚠️ Contact details listed there may be outdated.
