How to cancel your Virgin Active contract (2026): notice, fees, and what to do if they keep debiting you

Last checked: 25 October 2026

Who this guide is for

This guide is for anyone in South Africa with a Virgin Active membership who wants to stop it. That includes people on a 12- or 24-month contract, people on the newer month-to-month memberships, and people who think they've already cancelled but still see "VIRGIN ACTIVE" on their bank statement every month.

It explains, in plain language, what Virgin Active's own published terms say, what the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) adds, and how to use your bank and the ombuds if things go wrong. Every key claim links to a public source so you can check it yourself.

Disclaimer

This is general information, not legal or financial advice. We are not attorneys and we are not linked to Virgin Active, any bank, or any ombud. Your own signed membership agreement, any campaign terms that applied when you joined, and your bank's rules are what actually govern your situation. Gym terms change, so check the linked sources before you act. If a large amount of money is at stake, or you're facing legal action or a handover to debt collectors, get advice from an attorney, a Legal Aid South Africa office, or the free bodies listed below.

Month-to-month vs fixed-term: what's the difference?

First work out which kind of membership you have. It's on your membership application form, in your joining email, or you can ask your home club.

Fixed-term (e.g. 12 or 24 months) Month-to-month
Notice to cancel 20 business days' written notice Written notice by the 20th of the month to end at the end of that month. If it arrives after the 20th, it ends at the end of the following month
Cancellation fee Before the commitment period ends: a "reasonable cancellation fee" plus any arrears No early cancellation fee when cancelled correctly (per the 2026 month-to-month terms)
After the term ends Rolls over to month-to-month automatically unless you say otherwise. You then give 20 business days' written notice Rolls on until you cancel
Freezes Allowed for medical/travel reasons (1–6 months in a 12-month cycle, admin fee applies; this extends your commitment period) Not available on the 2026 month-to-month offer
Paid upfront? Refund of the unused portion, less a reasonable cancellation fee n/a

Just joined? There's a cooling-off period. Virgin Active's public contract says you can cancel in writing within 5 business days of signing (not counting the day you signed). If your home club receives the letter in that window, they refund all payments once you return any promotional items. (Public Contract T&Cs, clause 4)

On a medical aid or rewards plan (Discovery Vitality, Momentum Multiply, etc.)? Cancelling your Vitality/Multiply benefit does not cancel your gym membership. Virgin Active's terms say the membership carries on at the normal rate for your club until you cancel it with Virgin Active itself. (Public Contract T&Cs, clause 11)

Have children linked to your membership? When you cancel, linked memberships for children under 14 are cancelled automatically, on the same terms. (clause 7)

Exact steps to cancel

  1. Find your details. You'll need your membership number, ID number, home club, and the bank account the debit order comes off. If you can, find your original contract or joining email too, so you know your start date and commitment period.
  2. Check your timing.
    • Month-to-month: get your notice in on or before the 20th if you want it to end this month.
    • Fixed-term: count 20 business days forward from the day you send notice. Weekends and public holidays don't count.
  3. Cancel in writing, through an approved channel. Virgin Active's terms list:

    • the Virgin Active App ("when available". Not every membership has an in-app cancel option yet)
    • your home club (by email, or in person at reception)
    • the Contact Centre: 0860 200 911 (+27 860 200 911). Collection members: +27 21 684 3007
    • another written channel Virgin Active tells you about

The fixed-term contract says notices should be "posted, emailed or given in person to the receptionist at your Home Club." Our recommendation: even if you phone or use the app, also send a written email to your home club so you have a timestamped record. Ask the club or Contact Centre which email address to use, because we couldn't find one published central cancellation address. 4. Ask for written confirmation. Virgin Active's month-to-month terms say it will confirm your effective cancellation date and any final amount due. The contract also says Virgin Active can only act on notices it actually receives, and asks you to check that it got yours. If you haven't had confirmation within about 5 business days, follow up in writing. 5. Save everything. Keep screenshots, the sent email, the confirmation, the names of anyone you spoke to, and call reference numbers. You'll need these if you have to dispute a debit later. 6. Pay what's legitimately owed up to the cancellation date. Under both Virgin Active's terms and CPA s14, you still owe fees up to the effective date. You keep access until then if your account is in good standing. 7. Only once cancellation is confirmed, ask your bank to stop (suspend) the mandate for future debits (see below). Don't use this step instead of cancelling.

Fees and notice, explained simply

Month-to-month: no early-cancellation fee if you cancel correctly. You pay up to the end of the month your cancellation takes effect. Get your notice in after the 20th and that's one extra month.

Fixed-term, still inside your commitment period: you can cancel, but Virgin Active can charge a "reasonable cancellation fee" plus any arrears. Its public terms don't publish a fixed formula. Its help page just says a fee "is likely to apply" if you're within your initial period. In a 2022 Sunday Times column, Virgin Active was quoted as charging two months' fees on a 12-month contract and four months' fees on a 24-month contract (Wendy Knowler, TimesLIVE, March 2022). That's a few years old and may have changed, so ask for the figure and the calculation in writing.

Fixed-term, after your commitment period: you're now on month-to-month at the current rate. You give 20 business days' written notice and there's no early-cancellation fee.

Paid upfront and cancelling early: you should get a refund for the unexpired period, less a reasonable cancellation fee (clause 7).

Price increase you don't accept: Virgin Active's contract says that if you don't want to accept a fee increase you can cancel by written notice under clause 7. If you say nothing, you're treated as having accepted it.

What the CPA says (section 14, plain English)

Section 14 of the Consumer Protection Act applies to fixed-term agreements with consumers (individuals, and some small businesses).

Still being debited? DebiCheck and bank steps

First, a key point: stopping the debit order at your bank does not cancel your contract. Both PASA (the Payments Association of South Africa) and the banks say so. If you only block the debit, Virgin Active can still treat you as in arrears, and its contract allows it to recover arrears and collection costs. So cancel with Virgin Active first, then deal with the bank.

1. Check what kind of debit it is. Look in your banking app. A DebiCheck debit is one you approved electronically. Older debits may be EFT or registered mandate debits.

2. Go to Virgin Active first. PASA advises taking an incorrect debit up with the company that took the money before going to your bank. Send your cancellation confirmation and ask for a refund of anything taken after your effective cancellation date.

3. Stop future debits. Once you've cancelled, ask your bank (app, branch, or call centre) to suspend/stop the mandate. For DebiCheck, banks like Capitec say you can suspend the mandate to stop future collections.

4. Dispute a wrong debit, and watch the 60-day limit. Since 13 April 2026, the time you have to dispute a debit order is 60 calendar days from the day after the debit went off. Before that it was a much longer window. This applies to EFT, DebiCheck, and registered-mandate debits (PASA FAQ, April 2026).

Escalation ladder

Work up the ladder one step at a time, and keep copies of everything.

  1. Your home club, in writing. Restate your cancellation date and what you want, e.g. "refund R___ debited on DD/MM; confirm no further debits".
  2. Virgin Active Contact Centre / complaints process. Call 0860 200 911 and get a reference number, then follow up in writing.
  3. Your bank for the debit itself: suspend the mandate and lodge a dispute within 60 days if it qualifies. If your bank handles it badly, use the bank's own complaints process, then the National Financial Ombud Scheme (NFO): 0860 800 900, info@nfosa.co.za, nfosa.co.za.
  4. Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO) for the contract or cancellation-fee dispute with the gym. It's free and you don't need a lawyer. You must have tried the supplier first. Call 0860 000 272, email info@cgso.org.za, WhatsApp 081 335 3005, or use the online complaint form via cgso.org.za. The CGSO aims to resolve complaints within 60 business days. Its recommendations aren't binding (CGSO FAQ).
  5. National Consumer Commission (NCC) if the CGSO process ends without a resolution: 012 065 1940, enquiries@thencc.org.za, thencc.org.za/complaints. Note on the form that the matter has already been through the CGSO.
  6. Legal help for larger amounts or a debt-collector handover: Legal Aid SA, a university law clinic, or a private attorney.

We're working on similar step-by-step guides for other South African gyms and subscriptions, starting with Planet Fitness, and then others such as Zone Fitness and Viva Gym. Each will follow the same format: what the contract says, how to cancel, and what to do about debit orders.
